There are two different types of work permits:

Work Permit for International Students:
When you come to Canada as an international student, you are eligible for a work permit, allowing you to gain work experience in Canada while studying.
On-Campus: You will be permitted to work on campus for up to 20 hours a week without a work permit. You can work on your school campus, without a work permit, if you:
Off-Campus: As a full-time international student, you are entitled to work part-time about 20 hours a week any employer. During your semester breaks you are eligible to work full-time. You will need an open work permit before you can work off the school campus.
Co-op or Internship: If your program requires a co-op or an internship be completed as part of the graduation requirements, it is possible to apply for a co-op work permit when you are applying for a study permit. You will have to get a letter from your school that confirms all students in your program need to complete work placements to get their degree.
Post Graduate Work Permit: The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) allows international students who have completed post secondary education from a Canadian Designated Learning Institute (DLI) to obtain an open work permit. You can apply for a postgraduate work permit when you have completed your program of study in Canada. The PGWP will allow you to work full-time for any employer. The duration of the work permit depends on the length of your program. Work obtained through the PGWP program may help support your application to become a permanent resident of Canada.
Dependent Work Permit: Your spouse is also eligible for an open work permit in Canada if he/she wants to accompany you to Canada.
