STUDY PERMIT

A study permit a legal document that allows a student from a foreign country to study in Canada.  Most international students require a study permit to enrol in a Canadian academic institution.  Based on your country of citizenship, you may also require a temporary residence visa, which is issued at the same time as your study permit.  You may apply for a study permit either inside or outside Canada.

Study Permit Outside Canada: For applicants outside Canada, to be eligible for study permit you must meet the following requirements:
  • Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada
  • Proof language test results (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.)
  • You must be able to provide proof of payment for the first year of study
  • Proof of living expenses for the first year which is usually $10,000, as evidenced by bank statements
  • Completion of upfront medical exam
  • Most recent secondary and post-secondary transcripts

Student Direct Stream:
Students may apply for faster processing if they are legal residents of the following countries:
  • India
  • Pakistan
  • China
  • Philippines
  • Vietnam
  • Senegal
  • Morocco
Note: In addition to meeting the above requirements to be eligible for a study permit, applicants applying under this stream must provide a Guaranteed Investment Certificate of at least $10,000 in a CDIC member institution.

Study Permit Inside Canada : If you are in Canada as a visitor and wish to apply for a study permit to attend a designated learning institution, you may be able to do so from within Canada. Certain foreign nationals may apply for and receive a study permit from within Canada. These include:
  • Minor children studying at the primary or secondary level
  • Exchange or visiting students
  • Students who have completed a short-term course or program of study that is a condition for acceptance at a designated institution

Please Note : Students and their spouses are eligible for a work permit.  For more information please see the work permit section.

Upon successful completion of study, a student is eligible for a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).  A PGWP provides pathways for Permanent Residence for students. Click here for more info
